A young carer is someone under 18 years old who helps to look after a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or drug or alcohol problem. Young Carers look after parents or care for a brother or sister. We offer 1-1 support and group work opportunities for young carers. We provide a ‘Whole family approach’, including signposting and ensuring the right services are involved for a holistic solution towards supporting young carers. We work with schools to identify young carers so that the right support can be offered as early as possible.
We provide advice, guidance and support to young carers, under 18-year-olds who regularly provide emotional and/or practical support and assistance for a family member who is disabled, physically or mentally unwell or who misuses substances. We give young carers opportunities to be have fun, improve wellbeing, provide peer support and develop life skills dependent on what they needs
- Advice and signposting for a young carer, their family or other professionals by phone or email. No referral needed
- Advocacy for young carers who feel their voice is not being heard
- A weekly young carers ‘drop in’ at our base
- Group sessions for young carers to chill out and meet other young carers
- Group activities for fun and learning
- 1-1 support with action plans for young carers who need extra support
- Family support for thoe who are struggling
We work with young carers from 8 to 18 years old and support with transition to our local adult carers service. For young adult carers, please contact Bolton Carers.
We accept referrals from education, health and social care professionals with consent from the young person and parent/carers (age dependent). We also accept self-referrals and referrals from parents. Please complete our referral form and email it to youngcarers@blgc.co.uk.
